Information about the Balkan ski marathon
PAMPOROVO
The Balkan ski marathon and the mass ski run have been organized in the course
of 10 consecutive years by the Association “Marathon '96” - Sofia. Co - organizers
in the different years have been “Pamporovo - AD”, Bulgarian Ski Federation and
Municipality - Velingrad.
So far the official sponsors have been:
“Pamporovo - AD” - 1996, 1997, Coca-Cola - 1997, 2001, 2003, 2004, Price
Waterhouse - 1998, Price WaterhouseCoopers - 1999, Royal Holiday AD - 2000,
BSF - 2002, Bulgarian Ski Pool - 2005.
The idea for the holding the Balkan ski marathon came into being in 1980 after
the participation for the first time of the Bulgarian ski runner Petar Pankov in the
biggest world ski marathon at the distance of 89 km at Vasalopet in Sweden.
The initiators Petar Pankov and Todor Kazakov were enflamed by the idea of
Bulgaria, as a country developing the ski sport at a high level, to organize an event
of this magnitude similar to countries like Sweden, Finland, Norway, Russia,
Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia,
Switzerland, Italy etc. They started looking for supporters in sports circles.
In the course of many years opportunities had been searched for, for the organization
of such an event, while in the meantime mass ski runs and competitions at
different distances were organized at Mount Vitosha, at the village of Govedartzi
and in the Southern Park - Sofia. In the summer of 1995 Ivan Kandilarov indicated a suitable track meeting the
requirements for holding a ski marathon. This was the occasion for the creation of
an Initiating Committee consisting of 3 persons, which had to start the preparation
for the organization and for the holding of the I-st Balkan ski marathon
“Pamporovo’96”. A decisive role for the realization of this difficult undertaking
played “Pamporovo AD” in the face of its Sporting Director Yancho Yankov.
Upon the holding of the I -st Balkan ski marathon “Pamporovo’96” - 09.03.1996 in
October 1996 there was established the Association “Marathon’96” with the following
members: Petar Pankov, Todor Kazakov, Yancho Yankov, Stefka Koszuharova
and Ivan Kandilarov which has been organizing and holding all subsequent ski
marathons. In August 2003 the Association was also joined by Lyubomir
Guturanov, Petko Minkovski, Stefan Massurski, and Pantelei Memtzov.
The ski marathon has the biggest prize fund compared to the other ski run contest
held in Bulgaria, whereas the winner besides getting a money prize also
receives annually a unique crystal cup made by Petar Malov. The first 10 contestants
in the main ski marathon, as well as the winners in the different age groups in
the little ski marathon receive annually money and material prizes secured by the
sponsors: “OMV”, “SiVen”, “DIEL”, “G&K exchange”, “Royal Holiday” AD, Price
WaterhouseCoopers, Association “Pamporovo - 21 century”, “ABB - Bulgaria”
OOD, “Rossignol”, “Orion ski”, “Baron”, ET “Ivan Machkarsky”, “STIF “ EOOD,
ET “Malovglas”, “Touristsport” EOOD, Marconi, BOC, BSF, BBF, BOF, BTF, BVF,
ATIA, ET “Tom & Nezi 91” GS “Yundola”, Municipality Velingrad, “Dimeko” OOD,
“Libella”, Municipality Smolyan. |
