Sri Chinmoy

"I feel that the world needs dynamism. The outer world needs dynamism and the inner world needs peace. As seekers, we have to pray and meditate in order to have peace. Again, if we can be dynamic, then we will be able to accomplish much in our outer life. To be dynamic we need physical fitness at every moment, and running helps us considerably to keep physically fit. Also, running reminds us of our eternal journey in which we walk, march and run along Eternity's Road to our eternal Goal." Sri Chinmoy

Through his own achievements, as well as the founding of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team, Sri Chinmoy spent his life vividly demonstrating how sports can be a powerful means to unlock the true potential of the human spirit.

Sri Chinmoy founded the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team in 1977, and his vision, inspiration, encouragement and intuition have been the guiding force behind its growth into what is today the world's largest organizer of endurance events. His innate understanding of the limitless potential that lies within each one of us led him to conceive of endurance events that to others seemed beyond the bounds of human possibility - the prime example, of course, being the 3100 Mile Self-Transcendence Race, which has been running since 1997 and still remains the longest certified road race in the world.

In his own right, Sri Chinmoy was a formidable athlete, and the dedication which he put into his training inspired his fellow Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team members to expand their own capacities in participating in and organizing events. A champion athlete in the spiritual community where he spent his younger days, Sri Chinmoy inspired the newly-formed Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team through the intensity of his own example, completing a total of 22 marathons and 5 ultra marathons and participating in track-and-field events in Masters Games (including the World Masters Games in Puerto Rico in 1983 and the World Veterans Games in Miyazaki, Japan in 1993) before injury hampered his running career. Undaunted, he turned to the field of weightlifting, and soon began setting eye-opening records in this discipline which challenged everyone's perceptions as to what was truly possible. His final months on earth saw no halt to his inspirational dedication - as recently as August 2007 - less than two months before his passing on October 11 - Sri Chinmoy succeeded in lifting overhead 800lbs using only his right arm.

Sri Chinmoy's philosophy is that a balanced lifestyle fosters harmony and inner peace. His integral approach to life encourages physical fitness and sports as a vehicle for personal transformation.

"There are countless people on earth who do not believe in the inner strength or inner life. They feel that the outer life is everything. I do not agree with them," he said. "There is an inner life; there is spirit, and my ability to lift heavy weights proves that it can work in matter as well. I am doing these lifts with the physical body, but the power is coming from an inner source, from my prayer and meditation."

Sri Chinmoy practiced sports not only for the joy of it, and to keep the body fit, but also because he saw sports as a natural vehicle for expressing his philosophy of self-transcendence. Inspired by his example, several of his students have attempted to stretch their own personal limits - setting new world records in various fields, running multi-day races, swimming the English channel and climbing some of the world's highest mountains.

About the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team

The Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team puts on events for the sporting community in over 20 countries around the world. It is the world's biggest organiser of long-distance ultra running events, and also organises endurance events in other disciplines, such as triathlons and lake swims.

The SCMT organises races of all distances from two miles upwards, but it has become most well known for its pioneering work in organising ultrarunning races (races of longer than marathon distance). Many of the races organised by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team have now become established favourites in the countries they are held in. The 24-hour races organised in New Zealand, Switzerland and Great Britain are also the national events for those countries, and the Six-and Ten-Day races held in New York every year are extremely popular races in the USA ultrarunning calendar. In Australia, the SCMT offers an unparalleled range of multi-discipline events, including the famous Triple-Tri , a triathlon performed three times over in the scenic outskirts of Canberra. However, the jewel in the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team's crown is the 3100 Mile Self-Transcendence race, the longest certified road race in the world, which is run each year in New York between June and August.

The SCMT's love of hosting endurance events is a reflection of the core philosophy behind the team's activities. The races are organised on the principles of self-transcendence, where each runner competes against himself and his own previous capacities rather than against his fellow runners. Endurance races allow each competitor to go deep within and truly find the best within themselves in order to persevere and finish, and even though there are trophies for the leading finishers, in truth every runner who completes such long distances is a winner. Over the years, the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team has gained a reputation for the level of care and support they provide to the competitors in their raises, raising the bar for the level of care in ultra races in general.

Many SCMT members have performed remarkable feats in different disciplines over the years, showing that indeed anything is impossible if one just has faith in oneself. Perhaps the most well-known Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team member is Ashrita Furman, who currently holds over 70 Guinness world records in many disciplines, including the fastest five miles run on stilts (a record which had previously stood for over 100 years) and the fastest mile crawling. Every year in Munich, Germany, the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team hosts the Impossibility Challenger event in which specialists in unusual disciplines from all around the world arrive to try and achieve world records in their respective fields. Suprabha Beckjord from Washington DC holds the distinction of being the only person to finish the 3100 Mile Race every year it has been run. Karteek Clark from Scotland has swum the Channel eight times now; the forty-odd successful attempts by SCMT members at crossing the Channel makes it the team with the most Channel crossings by a long margin. The founder of the Marathon Team, Indian-born athlete Sri Chinmoy , was himself a prolific marathoner and ultramarathoner in the seventies and eighties, and was setting records in the field of weightlifting right up to his passing away in October 2007 at the age of 76.
