. world ski news : 50th FIS Congress gets underway in Cancun, Mexico - 07 Þíè 2016 - 12:49

FIS CONGRESS. Saturday, 4th and Sunday, 5th June 2016 were the official arrival days for FIS Congress participants in Cancun (MEX). More than 900 participants have registered to participate in the 50th International Ski Congress, from 5th-10th June 2016.

Always exciting and eagerly anticipated, an estimated 170 Congress delegates arrived throughout Saturday and 410 throughout Sunday, after the first travellers (around 70) already arrived on Friday, whilst the final are still expected on Monday, 6th June.

The longest journey to Cancun was that by the representatives of Australia, who landed in Mexico after some 20 hours of travel.

Accreditation ran smoothly thanks to the participants’ patience, and the experienced FIS Travel and FIS staff processing the arrivals.

Seminars highlight the start of FIS Congress

During the first two days of the 50th FIS Congress, two traditional seminars were held on Sunday and Monday.

The Congress week kicked off with the 16th Leader’s Seminar with the theme of ‘Training for Youngsters’. It was an in depth look at how various National Ski Associations are educating coaches, as well as how they can seek to access competition equipment to provide the next generation with the tools they need to excel in their sport.

The participants were treated to lectures from Peter Lauppi, who is responsible for education and research for Swiss Ski and Christian Frison-Roche, Director of the Salomon Racing Team. In addition workshops were held for each of the FIS disciplines to give tips and know how to implement youth programmes.

On Monday, the Ladies’ took centre stage at the Ladies’ Seminar with the theme of ‘Women in the Ski Sport Industry’ the participants were engaged in discussion on how to showcase what females have done and can do to plan for a successful career in sport.

Speakers included Ceil Folz, President of the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, Elene Gaja, Chair of FIS’ Sub-Committee for Alpine Courses as well as Carlos Padilla, President of the Mexican Olympic Committee and Klara Kaszo, President of the Hungarian Ski Association who shared their experience and provide useful tips and tricks.

Meanwhile, Karin Orgeldinger, Nordic Director at the German Ski Association and Niina Haaslahti, Operations Director at Vail-Beaver Creek 2015 and Project Manager for Are 2019 and Cortina d’Ampezzo 2021 enriched the seminar by steering two Working Groups on how to plan a career in sport and what qualities make women different in their roles from men.

It was the fifth edition of the FIS Ladies' Seminar.
