Neureuther wins final slalom, Herbst claims the title
GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (AFP) - - Germany's Felix Neureuther won the men's slalom at the World Cup finals in his home town on Saturday, followed by Austria's Manfred Pranger in second and Sweden's Andre Myhrer third. With a ninth place in the final slalom of the season, Austria's four-time season winner Reinfried Herbst claimed the discipline World Cup trophy.
Neureuther, clocked a combined total of 1 minute 43.63 seconds for his second career win, two months after his first in the prestigious Kitzbuehel slalom.
Neureuther's combined time was 1:43.63 with Pranger finishing second 0.29sec back and Myhrer third trailing by 0.35sec.
The son of two-time Olympic champion Rosi Mittermaier and former slalom great Christian Neureuther claimed his second career victory, two months after his first in the prestigious Kitzbuehel slalom. After a terrible start into the season, the German even pondered retirement but has now established himself among the slalom elite.
Julien Lizeroux who finished a respectable fourth at 0.45 seconds just missed out on taking the overall slalom title. In the end, Lizeroux finished the season with 512 points, just 22 points behind the Austrian Herbst with 534 points. Switzerland's Silvan Zubriggen ended up third on 365 having finished seventh in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 1.03 seconds back.
"This is a childhood dream," said Herbst after winning the only 2010 World Cup globe for ski power Austria. "It was a dream season with a lucky end ... I am so relieved now."
The final overall standings remained unchanged as World Cup winner Carlo Janka (1,197) of Switzerland and third-placed teammate Didier Cuche (952) did not race the slalom and number two Benjamin Raich of Austria (1,091) crashed out.
The Nations team event will wrap up the World Cup Finals series in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Sunday.
