Sochi 2014 has launched a nationwide competition in Russia to design the mascot for the Sochi Olympic Games. Beginning on 1st September, Sochi 2014 made its mark on the history of the Olympic Movement by inviting all Russians to submit their ideas for the Games mascot. The competition will run until 5th December 2010, and participants can submit their ideas through a special web portal (talisman.sochi2014.ru) or by post. The winning entry will be chosen by a national vote on 7th February 2011, exactly three years before the Games begin in Sochi.
A number of Sochi 2014 Ambassadors, who include renowned Russian athletes and celebrities, have already proposed their ideas for the Sochi 2014 mascot to inspire people across Russia to enter the recently launched mascot competition.
NHL legend Alexander Ovechkin, top model Natalia Vodyanova, Olympic medalists Oksana Domnina, Maksim Shabalin and Albert Demchenko are just a few of the Ambassadors who have already shared their ideas on how the mascots could look.
For example, Alexander Ovechkin has suggested that the mascot should be a happy sheep on a snowboard or holding a hockey stick and highlighted his preference for a humorous design. For her part, Oksana Domnina, world champion and bronze medal winner at the 2010 Games, thinks that the mascot should be a dolphin which would personify Sochi's natural beauty.
