. world ski news : Barcelona to open FIS Snowboard Worlds 2011 - 13 Ноември 2010 - 21:50
SNOWBOARD. This coming January 15th, the city of Barcelona's Palau Sant Jordi of Montjuic will host both the big air competition and the official opening ceremony for the FIS World Snowboard Championships 2011. The rest of the title competitions will be carried out in the resort of La Molina from 16th-22nd January 2011.
Thanks to the iconic installations built for the Barcelona'92 Olympic Games, the capital of Catalonia will utilize these to stage the first two important events of Spain's first event FIS Snowboard World Championships. A special quality of the 2011 Snowboard World Championships is the combination of city and mountain, which was also present at the Vancouver Olympic Games last February, as well as at the Turin Olympic Games in 2006.
The competition venue at the Palau Sant Jordi on Montjuic, where a 31 m high ramp will be built, has capacity for 17,000 spectators and was created by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki about 20 years ago. It is situated next to the classic Olympic Stadium of Athletics Lluís Companys which hosted the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup big air in November 2009. Attracting 16'000 spectators the highly successful event last year has provided the springboard and experience for the Organizers to stage the mega opening of the FIS Snowboard World Championships 2011 in Barcelona.
The Alabaus ski area will be the center of the competitions in La Molina. The complete remodeling of the restaurant-cafeteria has been finished, in order to accommodate all event participants. Furthermore, the Pedró hill has also been adapted, in order to fit the slalom and giant slalom parallel races. This event has moved in Comella and Estadi, where there were past World Cup races were. The objective is to have all of the races in the same area in order to add to the spectacle of the event, help with the mobility of the equipment and the spectators and to more easily facilitate the logistics of the event. The inclusion of slopestyle is presently being finalised following the successful conclusion of the latest technical inspection.
