BEAVER CREEK, Colo. – As the wind became stronger throughout the day, the 2010 Audi FIS World Cup men’s downhill race at Beaver Creek was eventually canceled on Friday.
Originally slated for 11 a.m. local time with the course moved down to the super G start, the race was first bumped back to 11:30, then to 1:30 p.m., then to 2 p.m., at which point wind gusts reached speeds of around 65 kilometers per hour on the middle of the course and the jury finally canceled the race.
Throughout years of adverse weather and mighty acts of snow removal on the part of the Beaver Creek organizers, Friday marks the first time in the history of the Birds of Prey that the downhill race has had to be canceled.
A rescheduled date and venue for the downhill has not yet been announced.
The rest of the Beaver Creek Birds of Prey World Cup program is set to run on schedule: the super G race is slated for 11 a.m. Saturday and the first run of the giant slalom scheduled for 9:45 a.m. on Sunday.
