Home victory for Severin Freund at Ski Jumping World Cup in Willingen

SKI JUMPING WORLD CUP. Home victory for Germany! For the first since Sven Hannawald in 2003 a German jumper won in Willingen. 22-year-old Severin Freund was already in the lead after the first round and with 139 m in the final and a total of 289.1 points he celebrated his victory in front of 20 000 fans. Austrian Martin Koch finished second with 286.2 points. Simon Ammann from Switzerland completed the podium as third with 284.5 points.

Freund: "An awesome feeling"

"This is absolutely great. It's an awesome feeling to win at home. That's really cool. I was a little nervous when I was the last to jump in the second round but this also pushes you. I want to establish myself among the best", said a self-confident Freund.

Thomas Morgenstern and Gregor Schlierenzauer from Austria came in fourth and fifth. Especially for Schlierenzauer the weekend in Willingen was a big step forward and as fifth he equalled his season best.

Poland and Finland with two strong jumpers

Kamil Stoch as sixth and Adam Malysz (9th) achieved a top result for the Polish team. Finland's Matti Hautamaeki finished 7th, followed by his teammate Janne Happonen, who made a great comeback in the World Cup in Willingen. The only Norwegian in the Top 10 was Tom Hilde as tenth. Johan Remen Evensen was 12th, behind the best Japanese Fumihisa Yumoto.

Roman Koudelka was the best Czech as 14th, ahead of the surprisingly strong Italian Sebastian Colloredo who achieved his best result of the season. Peter Prevc (18th) and Jurij Tepes (19th) were the best of the Slovenian team.

Some stars not in the final

Some stars, who jumped well in the team competition did not make the cut for the final round on Sunday. Piotr Zyla from Poland, the two Germans Michael Neumayer and Michael Uhrmann, Japanese Daiki Ito who won the FIS Summer Grand Prix and Norwegian Anders Bardal did not qualify for the second round.

Russian Pavel Karelin is also not in a good shape anymore. The 21-year-old from Nizhny Novgorod, who was on the podium during the 4-Hills-Tournament, was only 44th in Willingen. Denis Kornilov and Dimitri Vassiliev could also not show good performances and so the Russian team could not score points today.

Austria still favorite to win 100.000 Euro

The Austrians are on their way to defend the FIS Team Tour title. The points of the two best jumpers of each nation count for the overall ranking and with Koch and Morgenstern they were the best today. Austria could extend the lead because there was no second German athlete among the best.

After the strong performance in the team competition the Polish team could also score many points on Sunday with Stoch and Malysz. Finland also had two jumpers with a very good result. The second best German was Martin Schmitt as 20th.
