City events in Munich and Moscow, test events in Sochi
ALPINE SKI WORLD CUP. At the FIS Calendar Conference in Portoroz (SLO), the Alpine Skiing calendars for the 2011/12 season saw some updates being made and approved by the FIS Council in its meeting in Ljubljana (SLO) on Monday. Planned slalom and giant slalom competitions in Japan were cancelled due to the disaster caused by the recent earthquake which consequently meant it was necessary to cancel the other races in Asia due to the excessive travel. These will be replaced by Crans-Montana (SUI) and Bansko (BUL).
The white circus will again stop in Munich (GER) on 1st January 2012 following the highly successful inaugural city event last season in the Olympic Park. The second city event will be held in Moscow (RUS) on 21st February.
The classic Alpine Ski World Cup combined competition in Kitzbuehel, consisting of an addition of the results from Saturday's downhill on the Streif and Sunday's two-run special slalom on the Ganslern piste, stays on the calendar in 2011/2012. The traditional program was favored in place of introducing a super combined event instead of the super-G. The super combined in Wengen also features on the calendar for next season.
During the past winter the first test events took place in Sochi, with two European Cup races for both men and ladies. Next season will see the first competitions at World Cup level as both men's and ladies tours will stage downhill and super combined competitions in consecutive weeks. As scheduled, the World Cup Finals 2012 will be carried out in Schladming, Austria, as a final test event for the 2013 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.
