GRASS SKIING. The 17th edition of the Grass Skiing World Championships began in the valley of Goldingen (SUI) on 30th August with the official opening ceremony. After 1997 when Val Müstair played host to this title event, it is the second time that Switzerland is hosting the world's best grass skiers. Urs Lehmann, President of the Swiss Ski Association (Swiss-Ski), officially opened the event which will see 60 athletes from 10 nations participate.
The competitions began with the giant slalom races in the junior category in the morning followed by the open category's super-G races on Wednesday afternoon. The first gold medals went to Slovakia and the Czech Republic: the 20-year-old Barbara Mikova won the ladies' SG race while in the men's event the Czech Republic took a double victory with Jan Nemec winning ahead of Jan Gardavsky. The competitions will continue until Sunday, 4th September.
