Successful premiere staged worldwide

Sunday, 22nd January 2012 saw the inaugural FIS World Snow Day take place all around the world. 227 events organizers in 39 countries invited children, their families and the general public to enjoy the day through a variety of fun activities in and on the snow.

FIS would like to thank all the participants for joining the global celebration and all the Organizers for their fantastic work and impressive efforts in staging a great number of events. FIS would also like to thank its media partners Eurosport, The European Broadcasting Union and Infront Sports & Media for their invaluable assistance with promoting the initiative and the World Snow Day partners Intersport, Milka and the Best of The Alps for their contributions to the World Snow Day events.

FIS President GIan Franco Kasper stated: “As the International Ski Federation, we have a commitment to giving people a chance to enjoy the snow and promote the sport of skiing. We shall continue to do so for many years to come.”

FIS looks forward to celebrating an even bigger and more exciting 2nd World Snow Day in January 2013.

World Snow Day 2012 was the first event conducted on a global scale to celebrate snow sports as an integral part of a healthy lifestyle and to foster global awareness of the importance of nurturing the natural environment. Countries that participated in the inaugural World Snow Day included Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Iceland, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, and the United States. FIS is the governing body for international skiing and snowboarding, founded in 1924 during the first Olympic Games in Chamonix, France. Recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), FIS manages the Olympic disciplines of Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding, including setting the international competition rules. Through its 114 member nations, more than 6’000 FIS ski and snowboard competitions are staged annually. Specific initiatives are undertaken by FIS to promote snow activities as a healthy leisure recreation, notably for the young.
