ALPINE SKI. GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany—Sunday's men's super G here was canceled due to thick fog, which caused poor visibility and certain unsafe racing conditions for the athletes, officials determined.
At the super G start, the fog prevented much visibility past the first gate.
The race was scheduled for 12:30 p.m. but the officials, hopeful the fog would move out, pushed it back to 1 p.m. then 1:30 p.m. and finally 2 p.m. Since no change in visibility occured throughout that hour and a half window, FIS Race Chief Gunter Hujara annouced that the race would be canceled.
The downhill that Didier Cuche won on Saturday had to be significantly shortened due to fog.
January has caused consistent weather challenges for organizers and officials. This is the second super G canceled in two weeks.
It is not decided yet whether to reschedule this super G. Hujara had said a decision to reschedule the super G that was canceled in Kitzbuhel will be made after the Garmisch events. It is likely to be added to the Crans-Montana or Kvitfjell program.
