Second gold for Russian athlete Tatyana Kozlova
SKI ORIENTEERING. The Russian athlete Tatyana Kozlova followed up her victory in the Long race two days ago by winning the individual Sprint today with an impressive margin of 26 seconds. Bulgaria’s Stanimir Belomazhev, leader in the IOF SkiO World Rankings, enjoyed a 1-second victory in the men’s race.
Kozlova has had a podium placing in every race so far this week, and her triumph today was one of her best races ever. The silver medal went to Mervi Pesu, Finland, bronze medallist at middle distance earlier in the week, and Tove Alexandersson took her second bronze medal in three days with a race 1 second slower than Pesu’s. Russia demonstrated strength in depth with three of the first six placings.
After a generally very good SkiO Tour in January, Stanimir Belomazhev has been well below par in these Championships (11th & 21st) – until today. His strongest challenger was Peter Arnesson, Sweden, who missed a second gold of the week by just 1 second. Hans Jørgen Kvåle, Norway was third and now has gold, silver and bronze from the three individual formats, a highly successful week for him. In this race, five countries were represented in the top 6 places – Sweden had 2nd and 4th.
The final format of the Championships, the relay for teams of three (women 3 x 6 km, men 3 x 8 km), takes place tomorrow.
More reports from today’s race will be found in the ‘Around the Arena’ section on the IOF Home Page later in the day.
In the Junior World SkiO Championships Sprint, Sweden’s Frida Sandberg won her third individual gold medal. Another Swede, Ulrik Nordberg, won the men’s race.
