. world ski news : Vonn adds super-G title in week to remember - 12 March 2009 - 18:01
Lindsey Vonn added the super-G title to her downhill victory, with another dominating performance at the season finale in Are, Sweden.
The American already had the overall World Cup title in her pocket and was full of confidence as she ramped up the speed through the mid-section to lead by a quarter-of-a-second.
From then on, it was a matter of the 24-year-old maintaining her form which she did to finish in a time of 1:20:36, 8/100 ahead of Nadia Fanchini of Italy and Maria Riesch who was third.
While Vonn sealed her ninth win of the season, the discipline leader going into the race, Fabienne Suter, failed to seize the moment and never really got going from the off.
Suter led Vonn by just 15 points and the pressure told as she finished back in eighth place.
Conditions had clouded over compared to the bright sunshine that had bathed the course for the men earlier in the day as Renate Goetschl of Austria set the early marker of 1:21.27.
However, once the higher-ranked competitors took to the course, Riesch wiped that lead out by 40/100.
The German brought her technical skills to the fore over the top part of the hill before stepping on the accelerator through the lower section.
As Suter slipped away, Fanchini produced a stunning descent and coupled power with a fluid style to put her in the box seat by 16/100.
Nevertheless, Vonn would not be denied as she blew the opposition away to capture another crystal globe.
Fanchini leapt ahead of Suter to secure second place in the final super-G standings.
