WINTER UNIVERSIADE. The 25th Edition of the World Winter University Games, or the Winter Universiade, will begin on 27th January and last until 6th February. The Athletes' Village in Erzurum, Turkey, was officially opened on 21st January and will see more than 3'000 students from a record number of 58 countries living there and competing during the upcoming eleven days. The opening ceremony will take place at the Cemal Gürsel Stadium with a capacity of 21'000 on 27th January.
The Winter Universiade consists of seven compulsory sports (Alpine Skiing - Nordic Skiing which is composed of Ski Jumping, Cross-Country & Nordic Combined - Biathlon - Ice Hockey - Short-Track Speed Skating - Figure Skating - Curling) and one or two optional sports also chosen by the host country. In Erzurum these optional sports are Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding.
Erzurum, with a population of nearly 400'000, is the capital of Erzurum Province, the largest province in Turkey's Eastern Anatolia Region. The city is situated 1757 meters above sea level.
