Norway sweeps GS podium
JUNIOR WORLD ALPINE SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS. Jasna, Slovakia – Norway’s 19-year-old alpine sensation Henrik Kristoffersen raced to giant slalom gold on 4th March 2014. His teammates Marcus Monsen (+1.03) and Rasmus Windingstad (1.20) completed the podium, leading to a sweep by the Viking trio.
“It’s unbelievable. Three Norwegians on the podium, that’s fantastic!”, the triple Junior World Champion Kristoffersen said.
Already in the lead after the first run, all three racers defended their position, letting no other nation claim any of the coveted top spots. Germany’s Thomas Dressen who delivered one of his best GS performances landed in 4th place with a +3.05 second margin.
“Both my runs went pretty well today. It’s the second time I have become Junior World Champion in giant slalom next to super combined gold which I won last year. It’s really special to me.” Kristoffersen said.
The rising Alpine star has recently returned from the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi (RUS) where he became the youngest male medalist in Olympic Alpine history winning slalom bronze. The two-time Junior World Champion (giant slalom 2012, super combined 2013) has now added another gold to his collection.
Marcus Monsen who already took bronze in super combined a week ago again demonstrated his perfect shape. A regular participant in Europa Cup races, he claimed his best GS season results with a 6th and 8th place in Les Menuires (FRA) and Borovetz (BUL) just prior to the Junior Worlds.
Bronze medallist Windingstad also made a number of top ten appearances at Europa Cup races with three fifth places (Vemdalen (SWE), Les Menuires, Borovets) being his best season results.
