Adam Malysz closely missed his 39th World Cup victory. The competition in Klingenthal ended in a showdown for victory between the 32-year-old Pole and Simon Ammann. At the end Swiss Ammann was better and celebrated his fifth victory this season. Ammann won with a total of 263.9 points ahead of Malysz (257.2 points). After winning five out of five competitions in Klingenthal, Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer was only third on "his" hill and lost valueable points again in the fight for the lead in the overall World Cup.
But Schlierenzauer was still satisfied. "A third place is a good result. Simon and Adam showed a very good competition. Everything's okay", he told Berkutschi.
With Wolfgang Loitzl, David Zauner and Andreas Kofler three more Austrians followed Schlierenzauer. The winner of Oberstdorf, Anders Jacobsen, was best Norwegian as seventh. With this great team result the Austrians now lead in the FIS Team Tour ranking ahead of Norway. Robert Kranjec from Slovenia finished eighth and is constantly showing top performances at the moment.
Good comeback for Schmitt - Strong German team
Best German was Michael Uhrmann as ninth, followed by Michael Neumayer (10th). "This result gives me motivation and I take that to Willingen", said Neumayer. Martin Schmitt had a good comeback in the World Cup and was very satisfied with his 13th place. "The take-off is not on the best level, There are still some little things to work on, but it get's better with every good jump", the 32-year-old told and underlined, with a big grin, that he does not feel old yet.
In front of about 20 000 enthusiastic spectators the German team showed a very good competition. Seven Germans reached the final and and are now second in the Nations Cup ranking behind the dominating Austrians. "Things are looking up and that's why I'm confident that I'll be in a good shape at the Olympics", Pascal Bodmer (20th) already looks ahead to the Olympic Games in Vancouver.
Olli not in the final round
Once again Harri Olli could not reach the final round. After his great performance on Tuesday and the victory in the qualification he jumped only 112.5 m in the competition and was 31st. This fate was also shared by Georg Spaeth, Stefan Thurnbichler, Kai Kovaljeff and Vegard Sklett.
Besides Malysz, Grzegorz Mietus could score points for Poland as 22nd. The Polish team is not that strong at the moment, but with Malysz they have a good chance to win a medal in Vancouver.
With 1249 points Ammann now has a clear lead over his long-time rival Schlierenzauer (1092 points) in the overall World Cup ranking. Malysz is sixth, Michael Uhrmann is the best German as 12th.
