SNOWBOARD JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. After having played host to 19 LG FIS Snowboard World Cup events since the FIS Grand Finals 2008, including the Snowboard World Cup Finals again in 2009 and a World Cup weekend in 2010, the snow-secure competition stadium on the plateau between the towns of Chiesa and Lanzada will be carrying out the 15th FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships from 28th March - 3rd April 2011.

Valmalenco also hosted the 12th FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships in 2008 at a very short notice after those had to be cancelled in Khanty-Mansisk (RUS) due to force majeure. The Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) and the organising committee in Valmalenco then carried out superb Snowboard Junior Worlds that have stayed in fond memory of all participants.

“Valmalenco is really unique thanks to the security of the snow and the great motivation and flexibility of the local organising committee and its volunteers. The hospitality and special charm of this region make competitions there into real season highlights,“ says FIS Snowboard Race Director Uwe Beier.

More than 300 young riders from some 30 countries will be expected to compete in the Valtelline valley and to enjoy the event along with the region that is not just famous for its sunny slopes but also for its hot spring spas, cheese and wine.

Eva Samkova and Regino Hernandez new SBX Junior World Champions

Eva Samkova (CZE) and Regino Hernandez (ESP) have grabbed the first two Gold at the 15th FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships in Valmalenco, the Italian resort which already hosted the Juniors in 2008.

The Czech World Cup rider, who had posted her career’s best on the same slope at the third to last snowboard cross World Cup race of the season two weeks ago successfully competed in the ladies final against Chloe Trespuch (FRA), Chloe Banning (USA) and Miriam Wuffli (SUI) who placed second to fourth respectively.

On the men’s side, Regino Hernandez was the man to beat as he won all of his heats yesterday. However, the Spanish rider also took benefit from a riding mistake of Germany’s Maximilian Stark who crashed while being in the lead by 50 meters.

According to this, the door was wide open for Hernandez who raced to Gold. Matija Mihic (SLO) and Elias Koivumaa (FIN) rounded out the podium as second and third.

Julie Zoog and Tim Mastnak claim PGS titles

On the women’s side, Julie Zogg took advantage of her World Cup experience thus dominating the final against her fellow countrywoman Stefanie Mueller crossing the finish line 70 hundredths ahead of her rival. In the battle for third, Cheyenne Loch (GER) had the whip hand over Bernadette Ernst (AUT).

On the men’s side, Tim Mastnak (SLO) crowned himself PGS Junior World Champion after he had managed to catch up a gap of .55 seconds on Lukas Mathies (AUT) in the second run of the final, finally turning the disadvantage into a lead of .13 seconds.

Edwin Coratti (ITA) rounded out the podium as third by edging off Stefan Baumeister (GER) in the small final.

Julie Zogg and Lukas Mathies claim PSL Gold at Junior Worlds

What a day for Julie Zogg. After the Swiss had won Gold in the Parallel Giant Slalom at the 15th FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships, the World Cup experienced athlete also claimed the title in the Parallel Slalom and thus is the most successful participant of the event so far.

Zogg beat Cheyenne Loch (GER) in the big final after her 16-years-old rival had missed a gate and thus got disqualified. In the Austrian battle for third, Sabine Schoeffmann crossed the finish line ahead of Maria Sitzenfrei.

On the men’s side, Lukas Mathies was able to clinch his career’s first ever international title. The Austrian, who had lost the PGS finals on Wednesday, held the whip hand over Russian Dmitriy Bazanov. Germany’s Stefan Baumeister rounded out the podium as third edging off PGS Gold medalist Tim Mastnak (SLO) to fourth.

Japan takes it all in the halfpipe

On the women side, World Cup experienced rider Haruna Matsumoto and Hikaru Ohe celebrated a 1-2 punch with Matsumoto (28.4 points) edging off her team mate with the tiny mere of 0.2 points to the second spot.

Mirabelle Thovex (FRA, 26.0) rounded out the podium as third.

On the men’s, Taku Hiraoka dominated the pipe contest claiming the best score of 28.3 points and thus the title.

Taylor Gold from the USA finished second with 24.5 points, Ayumu Nedefuji, another Japanese rider, in third (23.2).

Gyarmati and Schattschneider on top of the slopestyle world

After Clemens Schattschneider had won the first ever awarded Big Air-Slopestyle World Cup title, the Austrian’s season concluded with the best possible result: on top of the slopestyle Junior World Championships contest.

The 19-years-old earned the best score of 26.2 points thus relegating Tim Kevin Ravnjak (SLO, 24.4) and Jan Scherrer (SUI, 23.2) to second and third.

On the women’s side, Anna Gyarmati caused a sensation as the Hungarian rider claimed the first ever FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships title and medal last Sunday.

Gyarmati brought home Gold with 25.1 points. Merika Enne (FIN, 24.7) and Karly Shorr (USA, 22.9) rounded out the podium as second and third.
