The 2003 downhill world champion and winner of 19 World Cup races Michael Walchhofer is going to mentor the Austrian downhill team. The deal became reality in discussions between sport chief Hans Pum, Austrian men’s head coach Mathias Berthold and Michael Walchhofer.
Walchhofer who retired after the 2010/2011 season is going to begin his assignent already on 26th December in Bormio (ITA).
Mathias Berthold is convinced Walchhofer is the right person for the job: “His primary task will be to share his experience with the young athletes who are starting at the various downhill races for the first time. Thanks to his success, his personality, and his professionalism, Michael is the right guy for the task both off and on the piste. His role not be that of a regular coach but rather that of a mentor. “
“This is a big challenge for me. I am excited to be able to pass on my knowledge to the youngsters. I would like to provide them with the necessary input to prepare themselves optimally for the differing World Cup courses. I know most of the racers from my active career and the others I would like to get to know as soon as possible. I am looking forward to a good cooperation.“ said Michael Walchhofer.
