Since 2001 the International Ski Federation (FIS) established the tradition for the Big Air snowboard competitions to be staged in the cities of Europe. The organizers of these events would combine them with concerts featuring world famous musicians that would as a rule attract 20,000 to 40,000 teenage fans. Until now, Munich, Berlin, Salzburg, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Milan, Turin and Rotterdam hosted the Big Air World Cup rounds. But this year, for the first time, Sofia will be the second stop of the World Cup tour. The other venues will be Stockholm, Rotterdam, Graz and Moscow. The Bulgarian organizers of the grand event are the Bulgarian Ski Federation, Bulgarian Ski Pool, Sofia City Municipality who will be working hand in hand with FIS' Snowboard Committee. Sofia City Mayor Boyko Borissov will chair the Bulgarian organizational committee.
Seventy Snowboard Masters Gather in Sofia
About three hundred tons of snow will be spread in the heart of Sofia, where the World Snowboard Cup Big Air will take place. Seventy world's top snowboarders will take part in the breathtaking show on December 22. The event will be covered live by Channel One of the Bulgarian National Television and Eurosport. About 30,000 fans of snowboarding are expected to watch the performances of the masters.
A huge ramp - 100 m long, 25 m wide and 31 m high - will be built in the "Alexander I - Battenberg" Square and it will be covered with snow from snow cannons. The final series are on 22-nd of December in the evening. The organizers say there will be a lot of fireworks, and the participants' performances will be shown on huge TV walls.

The World Snowboard Cup for men – Big Air-Sofia is held with the support of BTC Group. The news was announced during a special press conference on November 28, 2007 by the organizers – the Bulgarian Ski Federation, Metropolitan Municipality and the Bulgarian Ski Pool. The Tournament will take place on December 22, 2007 at Knyaz Alexander Battenberg Square in Sofia.
Bulgarian Tele-Comunications Group traditionally supports the development of the extreme winter sports in Bulgaria and offers a number of favourable opportunities to people, who show interest toward the snowboard, to develop and to demonstrate their skills. For the competition at "Knyaz Alexander I - Battenberg" Square will be constructed a special Big Air jump, a huge metal construction (100 meters long – 25 meters wide and 31 meters high), covered with 600 cubic meters of artificial snow. The finals of the competition will take place during a night session under artificial illumination, pyrotechnics and a huge multimedia screen will complement the show in the capital.
