Simoncelli wins giant slalom on Gran Risa; first Italian since Tomba
ALTA BADIA, Italy (AP) _ Davide Simoncelli did Sunday what no Italian man had done since Alberto Tomba. He won a giant slalom race on the steep and twisting Gran Risa course, where Tomba stormed to four victories, the last coming in 1994. It was Simoncelli's first World Cup victory.

Simoncelli Enjoys First World Cup Win
Sun Dec 21, 8:16 AM ET, By Simon Evans

ALTA BADIA, Italy (Reuters) - Italian Davide Simoncelli took up the mantle of Alberto Tomba when he won his first World Cup race on Sunday in a giant slalom.
Simoncelli, who led after the first leg, held his nerve in the second run to beat Finland's Kalle Palander and world champion Bode Miller of the United States. The 24-year-old Simoncelli, who clocked two minutes 33.90 seconds, had shown his potential with second places last week and last season in Alta Badia, where former Olympic champion Tomba won four races in the 1980s and 1990s.
Although he made some slips on the early part of the icy course, Simoncelli recovered well to power over the line to the roars of the home crowd.
The aggressive Palander, who won here a week ago, was 1.03 seconds behind, with Miller, the victor in the season's first two giant slaloms, a further 0.18 seconds back.
The home team had four men in the top 10, with Massimiliano Blardone fourth, Arnold Rieder seventh and Alberto Schieppati celebrating a career-best eighth place.
Tomba, now working for television, was among the first to congratulate a beaming Simoncelli at the finish line as a large crowd celebrated a rare moment of success for Italy in what has been a poor season so far.
"I was really nervous before the second run and I just couldn't wait to get started," said Simoncelli. "I made a few mistakes in the top section but that really woke me up and I knew I had to go for it then.
"I was aiming for top three here but I never expected to win -- it's wonderful."

Austria's Hosp wins her first slalom
MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO, Italy (AP) _ Austria's Nicole Hosp held onto a first-run lead to win her first World Cup slalom race Wednesday, canceling Anja Paerson's bid for consecutive-day wins. Hosp was the fastest skier in both runs on the steep Canalone Miramonti course.

Austria's Hosp Wins Her First Slalom
Wed Dec 17, 9:30 AM ET, By ANDREW DAMPF, Associated Press Writer

MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO, Italy - Austria's Nicole Hosp was the fastest skier in both runs and won her first World Cup slalom race Wednesday.
Hosp finished with a combined time of 1 minute, 37.97 seconds on the steep Canalone Miramonti course, 0.29 seconds ahead of Sweden's Anja Paerson, who won Tuesday's race.
Marlies Schild, another Austrian, was 0.53 seconds back in third place.
"I heard Paerson was leading when I was at the start and I said to myself I've really got to win this race," said Hosp, who finished third Tuesday.
It was Hosp's second career victory. Last season, she won a giant slalom on the Austrian glacier of Soelden.
Hosp attributed a large part of her success to a change of boots.
The win moved her up to second place in the overall World Cup standings, 190 points behind Paerson.
Paerson looked slightly unstable in her second run, with her arms and poles flailing out beside her.
She said she was tired and still getting her energy back from a successful North American trip.
"It's mentally tough always to be on the podium," she said. "I'll be very happy on Christmas to stay in bed. I thought I could have won today too. Both runs I was perfect on the top part, but I made some mistakes on the bottom. I'm happy for my second place."
The race was originally scheduled for the Slovakian resort of Vratna, but was moved due to a lack of snow.
Last season's overall winner Janica Kostelic canceled her appearance as a forerunner because of knee pain, which could lead to surgery.
Kostelic, who has yet to compete this season because of a thyroid problem, was a forerunner Tuesday. Kostelic also has a history of knee problems.

MADONNA DI CAMPIGLIO, Italy (AP) _ Bode Miller and Janica Kostelic participated in the unlikely role of forerunners for a women's slalom race Monday. Miller is trying to regain his form after failing to finish four of his last five races and Kostelic is preparing to return from a thyroid problem.
