Miller: "It all comes down to execution..."
"It was pouring rain, the conditions were soft and chunky, and the visibility was tough, too, because the rain stuck to your goggles all the time," Miller said. "It's just been frustrating because I've said over and over it's not necessarily when you take risks that you make mistakes

Rocca wins Chamonix slalom, Bourgeat second
CHAMONIX, France (AP) _ Italy's Giorgio Rocca won a men's World Cup slalom race Sunday, beating Frenchman Pierrick Bourgeat into second place. Rocca produced a smooth, faultless second run to win in 1 minute, 29.09 seconds, with Bourgeat clocking 1:29.17. Bode Miller of the United States recaptured some form with a third-place finish, completing the course in 1:29.52, ahead of fourth-placed Rainer Schoenfelder of Austria, who had the fastest first leg time. Meanwhile, 28-year-old Rocca, who now has three World Cup slalom career wins, jumps to the top of the slalom standings with 290 points after four races. Miller wins the combined race, with his times from Saturday's downhill added to those from Sunday's slalom. In other placings during the Sunday slalom, France's Olympic slalom champion Jean-Pierre Vidal finished fifth; Austria's Manfred Pranger sixth; and Austria's Heinz Schilchegger seventh.

Gerg wins super-G, Goetschl survives scary fall
VEYSONNAZ, Switzerland (AP) _ Germany's Hilde Gerg won a women's World Cup super-G Sunday for her best result in the discipline this season. The German mastered the soft and deteriorating conditions on the gloomy 1,940-meter (6365-foot) forest-lined Piste de l'Ours course in 1 minute, 21.34 seconds. For the second day in a row, Austrian Michaela Dorfmeister finished runner-up, crossing in 1:21.58. Saturday, she shared second place with Gerg. Austrian Silvia Berger was third, .76 back. Renate Goetschl, who won Saturday's downhill, crashed out near the top of the course but escaped relatively unhurt. The experienced Austrian put too much pressure on the inside of her ski, knocked them together and went careering off course. After laying motionless for several moments, tangled in the safety netting, Goetschl got up and angrily shook her head. "If you want to win, it's at your own risk," Goetschl said in the finish area as she iced the thumb she sprained slightly when she hit the netting. "You have to go to the limit and maybe I took too much risk, but it happens. It's skiing. "It's disappointing but I'm healthy and that's the important thing. Next week in Cortina I'll be super charged." Goetschl, who has been excelling in the speed events this season, will have a chance to redeem herself when the women next travel to Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, where they compete in a pair of super-G and two downhills.

Schoenfelder takes early lead in slalom
CHAMONIX, France (AP) _ Austria's Rainer Schoenfelder provisionally took the lead Sunday after the opening leg of a men's World Cup slalom ski race. Schoenfelder clocked an impressive time of 43.80 seconds on the Alpine course in Chamonix, pipping Finland's Kalle Palander, second in 43.94, and Austria's Manfred Tranger, third in 44 seconds. "I found the piste very easy," said Palander, winner of two slalom races this season. "I'd even say it's the easiest on the World Cup circuit. It's very flat." In other provisional placings ahead of the deciding leg later Sunday, Olympic slalom champion Jean-Pierre Vidal of France placed 15th, while American Bode Miller managed 10th.
